How are dental implants different from dentures?

Dental implants and dentures both replace your natural teeth, but the approach is different:

Dental implants

Dental implants are small titanium posts inserted into your empty tooth sockets. The implants integrate with your jawbone after placement, providing a base for crowns, bridges, or implant-anchored dentures.

Traditional dentures

Traditional dentures are removable appliances. Like dental implants, they replace some or all of your teeth, but there’s no placement procedure involved.

Other than restoring my teeth, what are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer various benefits, including:

  • Confidence
  • Durability
  • Easier biting and chewing
  • Improved oral health

Dental implants eliminate the hassle of removing dentures. And, since they are supported by your jawbone, you don’t have to use sticky adhesives to hold them in place.

Can anything prevent me from getting dental implants?

Most people with healthy gums and bones qualify for dental implants. If the Riverside Dental team determines you have gum disease or decay in your jaw or alveolar bone (the bone that anchors your upper teeth), they treat those issues first.

How long does getting dental implants take?

At Riverside Dental, getting dental implants takes 6-12 months.*

Implant placement

Your Riverside Dental provider numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and places the implants into your empty tooth sockets. You might get one implant or multiple, depending on your dental records and treatment goals.

Implants don’t integrate with your bone immediately, so your mouth heals for several months. During that time, follow your provider’s instructions and take any medications as prescribed.

Implant restoration

You return to Riverside Dental when your mouth finishes healing. The team takes intraoral scans and sends them to a nearby lab that designs and manufactures your custom implant restorations.

The manufacturing process takes several weeks. When your implant restorations are finished, you visit Riverside Dental for the last time. Then, your provider attaches your crowns, dentures or fixed-bridge to your dental implants.

How do I keep my dental implants in top condition?

To keep your dental implants in top condition, practice good oral hygiene. The Riverside Dental team recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting Riverside Dental every six months for preventive care.
