I have discolored teeth, can I benefit from teeth whitening?

Yes. The Riverside Dental team uses teeth whitening to treat stains and discoloration caused by:

  • Tobacco use
  • Drinking coffee, red wine, or cola
  • Taking medication with tetracycline
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Trauma

Sometimes, teeth become discolored because of the aging process. Daily activities, like biting and chewing, cause your tooth enamel to wear down, making the dentin underneath more visible. Dentin is naturally yellow, causing your smile to look discolored.

What are the types of teeth whitening?

The Riverside Dental team offers several types of teeth whitening, including:

In-office teeth whitening

In-office teeth whitening makes your smile up to eight shades lighter* during a quick outpatient visit.

During treatment, your Riverside Dental provider applies a hydrogen peroxide gel to your teeth. Your teeth absorb the gel, and it oxidizes the discolored molecules inside. The oxidation process minimizes the appearance of stains, brightening your smile.

Your dentist might apply the whitening gel to your teeth multiple times, depending on your desired results.

Take-home teeth whitening trays

Take-home teeth whitening trays allow you to brighten your smile from the comfort of your home.

A take-home teeth whitening kit contains a bottle of hydrogen peroxide gel and two removable mouthpieces that fit snugly over your upper and lower dental arch. You squeeze the gel into the mouthpieces and wear them for 3-4 hours daily, whenever it’s most convenient.

Take-home teeth whitening trays won’t brighten your smile immediately, but the end results are just as noticeable as an in-office treatment.

Will my teeth whitening results last?

After teeth whitening treatment, your results last 4-6 months.* Even so, you can extend them by practicing good oral hygiene. The Riverside Dental team recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting the nearest office every six months for a preventive exam and routine teeth cleaning.

If you drink staining beverages, like coffee or soda, your dentist might recommend using a straw. If you want to quit using tobacco, they can make recommendations to help you achieve your goal.
